During the spring of 1855 in the month of March, Norman Clinton along with his family U. P. Clinton, Boardman Luman, and Mandy settled along the bank of the Pigeon River. Together they built the first establishment that grew into the city of Clintonville.
The home they built was constructed out of poles covered with hemlock boughs. It was not modern or convenient by any standards but nevertheless filled all requirements for a stable home until a more suitable home built of logs could be constructed. While there were many inconveniences, they were blessed with pure drinking water acquired from two large springs located on the bank of the river “Whose delicious water had flowed unmolested since the creation of the Universe.” “Many a weary traveler later quenched his thirst from their cooling waters” as well as some of Wisconsin’s most noted men because all hotels obtained their drinking water from the precious springs.
In March 2012, the city came to widespread press attention due to a number of mysterious booms heard by many in the city. The U.S. Geological Survey detected a 1.5 magnitude micro earthquake nearby on March 21, which geophysicists said might have produced the sounds.
