"The Biggest Little City in Iowa "
Home of Moose Days!
In October of 1990 people swarmed to a corn field north of Melvin to catch a glimpse of a moose that had wandered into the area. It is presumed that the moose came from northern Minnesota. The moose stayed in the area for several days before wandering further south to Sutherland and Spencer Iowa. Every year since this event, Melvin has observed Moose Days during the Summer.
The Melvin Public Library was first opened in 1958. After several expansions, the library now contains thousands of books, magazines and videos. Also provided are a story / crafts hour and public internet access.
In 2007 Melvin was a mid-day stop for RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI is the Des Moines Register's great bike ride across Iowa. The annual event attracts thousands of bicycle riders from across the country. The event proved to be a great opportunity where Melvin was able to showcase what it had to offer.
