In 2014, Latimer, Iowa community member Val Plagge had an idea to bring a Little Free Library to town, to promote reading and literacy for all ages. Latimer doesn’t have a library in town and she thought a Little Free Library would help fill that void. The Latimer City Council approved for Plagge to use a vacant lot in Downtown Latimer on Akir Street for the Little Free Library in February of 2014 and it was installed that spring. A grant from Post Alphabet Cereal helped with the purchase of the Little Free Library and a starter book collection. Since 2014, many community members and businesses have been very supportive of the project by donating books and being patrons of the Little Free Library. In 2018 the CAL Kindergarten Class held a Book Drive for the Little Free Library and they also helped repaint it with their handprints.During the summer benches are placed near the Little Free Library so you can sit down and enjoy your book right away. The Latimer Little Free Library stays stocked with a collection of books for all ages and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
