Brandon is a city in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, and is the largest suburb of Sioux Falls. Brandon is the seat of Brandon Township of Minnehaha County, and is located five miles east of Sioux Falls.
Brandon was platted as a village in 1878. It is located in Minnehaha County, which was established in 1862. The county derived its name from a Sioux Indian term for waterfalls. Brandon was incorporated as a city in 1973. It was named after Brandon, Vermont. Brandon offers easy access to the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum, the Siouxland Heritage Museums and the Pipestone National Monument.
The Brandon Area Museum provides insight into the history of the city. The Palisades State Park offers a wide variety of opportunities for recreation. One can also visit the Big Sioux Recreation Area and Falls Park. Some of the local festivals include the Homesteader Day Harvest Festival and the American Festival.
