Dover is in SE Minnesota, conveniently located between Rochester and
Winona Minnesota. The area was settled by immigrants from the Dover, New
Hampshire area naming the Township Dover and the present City of Dover,
Dover Center. The railroad played an important part in the development
of the area with both the Chicago and Northwestern Railway and the
Minnesota and St. Peter Railway developing depots here. As mail service
came to the communities, the Center was dropped from the name of the
village because the mail would get confused with the community of Dodge
Center which is located west of Rochester. Originally founded in 1854,
it was not until 1908 that it was incorporated into a City.
The 2010 census shows a population of 735 people in a community which
is served by US Highway 14 to the north and Interstate 90 to the south
and Olmsted County 10 and 142 dissecting the community. Today Dover is a
mixture of old and new developments with a small town charm.
