The City of Houston, population 979, is located in the beautiful Root River Valley of Southeastern Minnesota. Houston is a unique combination of a charming, small-town feel and modern conveniences. The City has an excellent school system and a variety of locally-owned businesses.
Whether you like to bike, hike, hunt, bird or nature watch, Houston is an ideal setting for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. We are the eastern terminus of the Root River Bike Trail System, and our Trailhead Park features a Nature Center, natural playground, primitive camping, and much more. The City is also home to the International Owl Center, featuring Alice the Great Horned Owl and other live owls.
Houston is home to South Park, featuring a new public archery range and boasts two new public ball fields at multipurpose Bluffview Community Park.
Volunteers in the community host a variety of special events throughout the year including the International Festival of Owls, Root River Triathlon, Houston Hoedown, Taste of the Trail, a fall art festival, and the Houston Hollidazzle.
