About Mauston, WI


The City of Mauston is the County seat of Juneau County, and located 73 miles north of Madison, WI. It is also next door to Wisconsin’s second and fourth largest lakes, Petenwell and Castle Rock Lake.

The city was founded by Milton M. Maugh and had the original name of Maughs Town after the founder. The city’s beginning was based on the lumber industry of early Wisconsin. Incorporated in 1887 with a population of 1,857 the city today has a population of 4,500. Mauston is a full service municipality providing police and fire protection, water/wastewater utilities, solid waste collection, curbside recycling, a small airport, parks and recreation, public works, planning/zoning and other services.
