A Good Place to Call Home
Named for explorer Lewis H. Morgan, Morgan, MN is located in Redwood County. Redwood County was first established in 1862, and was one of the largest counties in all of southern Minnesota. In 1850, steamboat travel started up the Minnesota river reaching Redwood County in 1853. This brought supplies and people to the area and carried out wheat to Riverside which in 1881 became the birthplace of Sears.
Railroad travel became prevalent in Redwood county during the late 1800’s. And at one time there were 116 school districts in the county.
A point of interest is the Gilfillan Estate located just outside of Morgan. Charles Duncan Gilfillan purchased 13,000 acres of land in Redwood County. Charles built a beautiful home and offices, and later a grain elevator, stock yard, and tenant homes.
Charles Oswin Gilfillan, who succeeded his father as owner of Gilfillan, built the Morgan Library in honor of his father. He left the farm site to the Redwood County Historical Society in order to preserve the history of the Gilfillan Estate and the surrounding area as well as to make its history available to the public. Tours are available by appointment.
With a population of 896 Morgan is a rural community with roots going back to the late 1800’s. With an agricultural based economy and a variety of businesses and industry, Morgan, is a peaceful and safe community in which to live or visit.
