Nestled in a valley located at the intersection of the Republican River and historic US 36 highway, one of the most charming main streets in North Central Kansas invites antique treasure hunters and leisure travelers alike to stroll and browse the charming Main Street shops, learn about the area’s Scandinavian and pioneer history, or simply relax and enjoy a bite to eat at the local bar and grill.

Originally named New Scandinavia, the first settlement was made in the fall of 1868 by an 11 member group of the Scandinavian Agricultural Society from Chicago, Illinoisl. New Scandinavia was a town of many firsts in the county, including the first store opened in 1869 and the first hotel, the Hanson House, established in 1870.

Scandia, Kansas has held tight to its agricultural roots planted deep in the surrounding farmland, even as it keeps pace with technology and innovation at twenty-first century businesses like Nesika Energy, a local producer of ethanol.

Pike Valley Schools, the local school district, offers state of the art technology including white boards, laptops, and internet classes for students.
A summer highlight, the Scandia Picnic follows June and July’s wheat harvest with a parade, motorcycle poker run, children’s activities, barbecue and evening street dance.

In 2006, Scandia, Kansas merchants instituted the first US36 Treasure Hunt that has grown to include communities dotting the entire length of Kansas from St Francis on the western edge of the state to St. Joe on the eastern edge. Each September, antique hunters and yard salers converge on the town which hosts one of the premier community-wide yard and trunk sales. The three-day event draws visitors from throughout the United States and Canada.
December’s lighted Christmas Parade is one of only a handful of night-time parades in all of Kansas.

Travel the 10 mile long road south out of Scandia to US 148, and enjoy historic limestone mansions built by Scandinavian settlers who helped to turn the prairie wilderness into the enterprising agricultural area it is today. Enjoy outdoor recreation at Jamestown Wildlife Reserve, a ten minute drive to the south, or boating and fishing at Lovewell Lake, just a 25 minute drive to the northwest.
