About Shell Lake, WI

Shell Lake is a friendly rural community of just over 1,300 people located in northwestern Wisconsin.

One of the City’s most unique features is its beautiful 2,580 acre lake. Shell Lake is the State’s largest landlocked seepage lake. It is about 36 feet deep at its deepest; it is clear and clean; and it is an excellent place to fish, sail, swim, or just relax.

In addition to our wonderful lake, Shell Lake is home to the world famous Museum of Woodcarving, housing the largest collection of wood carvings created by one man, Joseph T. Barta. We are also home to the Shell Lake Arts Center, which has been providing a quality arts education for over 40 years.

A Lakefront Pavilion provides an excellent location for outdoor concerts, picnics, family reunions, weddings and other events. The Arts Center performs many concerts at the Pavilion, and there is a free movie shown there every Monday evening during the summer.

With our quiet atmosphere, plentiful recreational and cultural opportunities, growing industrial and business park, and new housing developments, Shell Lake is a great place to live and play
