Steen is situated in Rock County in Minnesota. Steen’s namesake originates from John P. and Ole Steen, who came west to farm the uninhabited plains. The Steens donated a 20 acre plot of ground to the Illinois Central Railroad authorities after the authorities promised to build a station there. Steen, first named Virginia, was dedicated to the Steen family on June 13, 1888. That same year the town’s first school was built, followed by the first church in 1890 and a Pete Steen-established telephone company in 1904. It was incorporated in 1941, and is currently governed by Mayor Melvin Van Batavia.
