About Hatfield MN

HATFIELD, founded in 1880, has a name that is borne by a township and village in Massachusetts and by villages of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and other states. A local story of its naming says that in 1879 one of the men on a railroad grading crew had his hat blown off by the wind a number of times, and after retrieving it from the field, he suggested the name "hat field." The city was incorporated as a village on September 9, 1919; it had a station of the Southern Minnesota Railroad, and the post office began in 1880.
