Winthrop is known as the “Grackle City of the World. Winthrop is the boyhood home of longtime WCCO Radio personality Roger Erickson. Winthrop is home of Lyle’s Cafe, made popular by The Pie Lady of Winthrop, the title of a 1985 book by Minneapolis Star Tribune writers Peg Meier and Dave Wood. It was a compilation of Minnesota stories which had appeared in that newspaper. The Pie Lady(s) of Winthrop first 90+year-old Mina Peterson and then 40-year Lyle’s pie baker Karen Melius—were featured in numerous newspaper stories and television reports from 1980 through 1996.
