Madelia MN - Watonwan County Historical Society

Point of Interest in Madelia, MN

Mission

Our mission is to effectively link the past with the present and preserve it, for the future.

The Beginning

The Watonwan County Historical Society was organized in 1935. World War II ended those activities. Twenty-nine interested persons met at the American Legion Post House, Madelia, in 1966 launching the present organization. Four objectives were adopted:

  • Locate, record and preserve items of historic interest
  • Preserve and mark historic sites
  • Provide a fireproof building for their preservation and display
  • Work with the Minnesota Historical Society

None of this could have been achieved without the support of our county people and former residents. We are grateful to the Board of County Commissioners for its generous support and the City Council of Madelia for supplying free water and electric power.
