Pride of the Prairie
Nestled along the Watonwan River, Madelia is a unique blending of past and present. Established in 1857, Madelia preserves its history with several historical landmarks such as the marker erected just west of town where the Younger brothers, members of the Jesse James gang, were captured shortly after the infamous Northfield bank robbery. The Watonwan County Historical Center is located in Madelia and contains a cabin and a covered wagon dating back to 1857, as well as artifacts, books, papers, and pictures that tell the history of the early pioneers in this area. Madelia holds the record for being the only town in the U.S. bearing that name. Madelia has many fine parks, restaurants, recreational venues and businesses that make it a destination for a great “getaway”!
